The house on Elder Street had a roof and walls and freshly planted sod. But it wasn’t until Sunday afternoon that it became a home. Jack and Kathy Kemper, along with a crowd of family members, friends and Habitat for Humanity volunteers, made the transformation with a brief ceremony and a lot of love. “What a fantastic group of people we have here today,” said Lindsay Elliott-Hunt, executive director of the Flagler Habitat for Humanity. “Every family is special and every family has an incredible story.” The Kempers’ story, however, might be a little more special than normal.

A drug typically used to prevent organ rejection in transplant patients has been shown to reverse the progress of an often fatal lung disease in women, according to findings published March 16 in the online edition of The New England Journal of Medicine.

The discovery marks the first effective therapy scientists have ever found for the lung disease known as lymphangioleiomyomatosis, or LAM, a rare condition in women often discovered during pregnancy, said Dr. Mark Brantly, a University of Florida professor of medicine and one of the co-authors of the paper.
